AFI-BB joint learning program inaugurated

Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh Bank (BB) and the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) are hosting a Joint Learning Programme (JLP) in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 4 to 8 December 2017.

Mr. S. K. Sur Chowdhury, Deputy Governor, BB inaugurates the Program as chief guest at 09:30AM on Monday, December 4, 2017 in Tulip Hotel, Banani, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Mr. Norbert Mumba, Deputy Executive Director, AFI gives valuable speech as special guest. Mr. Md. Abdur Rahim, Executive Director, BB delivers welcome address on the occasion. 32 participants from 23 countries, high officials of GoB, senior executives from commercial banks and invited esteemed guests also attend the opening session. At session I in day 1, Dr. Faisal Ahmed, Chief Economist, BB offers a PowerPoint Presentation on ‘Financial System of Bangladesh: Role of BB as a Central Bank’.

This Joint Learning Program (JLP) ends on Friday, December 8, 2017 with distributing certificates among the participants by Mr. S. M. Moniruzzaman, Deputy Governor, and concluding remarks by Mr. Subhankar Saha, Executive Director, BB.

Mentionable that, this program provides a platform for peer learning on practical ways of formulating and implementing infrastructure for Digital Financial Services (DFS) and the role of efficient DFS in the country’s economic growth. It highlights the experience of Bangladesh in formulating and implementing framework to achieve fast, secure and affordable payment systems for all citizens in Bangladesh.

It also highlights the experience of monitoring and overseeing the payment systems and the policy that has taken to manage the risk particularly arise from the new payment model. Participants include policymakers and regulators from AFI member institutions contemplating to spearhead development of DFS in their own countries and/or those in the early stages of DFS implementation. This JLP forms part of AFI’s overall capacity-building program, in response to AFI members’ growing interest to establish and to operate efficient DFS in accordance with own country context.
