Staff Correspondent: Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam has expressed his satisfaction over the verdict of the much-talked about 21-August grenade attack.
Coming up with a reaction to the verdict at his office in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the attorney general said, “We feel satisfied over the verdict in 21-August grenade attack cases. But BNP’s acting vice-chairman Tarique Rahman should have been awarded death penalty if he was the mastermind of the grenade attack.”
“A milestone in the history of the Bangladesh judiciary has been created through this verdict as a number of conspiracies were made to spoil the case. At last, the real culprits got punishment through this verdict,” he said.
“We will file an appeal petition seeking capital punishment for Tarique Rahman in the August 21 grenade attack cases if we think so after seeing the verdict copy,” he added.
Earlier, a speedy trial tribunal on Wednesday sentenced 19 people, including State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar and former Deputy Minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu, to death while 19 others, including BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, to life imprisonment in two cases filed over the August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally in the capital in 2004.
Besides, 11 people were awarded different terms of jail in the sensational cases.
Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 at Old Dhaka’s Nazimuddin Road pronounced the verdict around 12:13 pm after a long wait for over 14 years
