‘Abu Bakar was killed as he sought BNP nomination’

Senior Reporter: Abu Bakar Abu, a BNP leader from Jashore, has been killed as he sought BNP nomination to contest the upcoming polls.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the allegation at a press briefing held at the party’s Nayapaltan office on Thursday night.

Abu Bakar Abu went missing from Paltan area four days ago after coming to Dhaka to seek party ticket. His body was found floating in the Buriganga River near the Faridabad dockyard.

Abu’s relatives identified him at the Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital mortuary.

One of his nephews, Jahid Hasan, a journalist working at a local newspaper in Khulna, said Abu went missing from the Metropolitan Hotel at Paltan on Sunday night.

Abu’s relatives said some people claiming to be his kidnappers had called them on phone and demanded ransom. The relatives had paid Tk 170,000, but he had not been freed, they said.

Abu, 58, a bachelor for life, had been elected chairman of Majidpur union council in Keshabpur Upazila of Jashore four times.

He was a vice-president of the BNP’s Jashore district unit.

It was the first time he sought the party’s nomination to run for parliament.

On Wednesday, the party submitted to the Election Commission a list of five of its possible nominees, including Abu, claiming police had arrested them.
