Achievements many, expectations too many

Ruling Awami League came to power for two consecutive periods after the general election held on January 5, 2014. The incumbent government under the leadership of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took office on January 12. Today the government has completed third year of the second consecutive tenure of her government.

The country has achieved many breakthroughs in last three years and development in power and agricultural sectors is the most remarkable development. The present government has put emphasis on the power sector. Power generation has increased to 11,952 megawatts in last three years. The government is working to ensure electricity for all villages. Food production in the country has increased to 3,84,118 lakh tones. The country is now in food sufficiency and exporting foods to many countries. Besides, remarkable progress has been noticed in the education sector. The admission rate in primary schools has increased by 97.30 percent in the last three years and dropout rate has reduced to 20.09 percent.

The government has taken an initiative to set up schools in 100 upazilas as part of plans to establish a technical school in each upazila in order to develop skilled workforce. 40 percent of the construction work of Padma Bridge has already been completed. The long standing problems between Bangladesh and India over 162 enclaves have been solved. Bangladesh-India enclave exchange deal came into effect on July 31, 2015. Following the effectiveness of the deal, around 55,000 people got freedom from longstanding captivity. It is no doubt a diplomatic and political breakthrough for the government.

It is a praiseworthy effort for the government to take the health service to the doorsteps of people. Keeping doctors at their workplace has been ensured. The government is trying to make the health service at the Upazila Health Complex available. Development in communication and information technology and other sectors has been remarkable. Now Bangladesh has gained the recognition as the role model of development in the world. Many world leaders have lauded the progress and development of Bangladesh in various sectors.

Bangladesh is also under the threat of militancy like across the world. The government has already taken a stern action against militancy and terrorism. The government has faced several recent militant attacks successfully. Now the big challenge ahead of the government is to keep the continuity of the economic development. Another task is to keep additional watch on the law and order so that social crimes cannot surface again. Citizens of the country expect more from the government. So the government will have to move forward keeping this thing in the head.
