Actor Kalyan gets bail

Staff Correspondent: A court in Dhaka has granted the bail petition to actor Kalyan Corraya who was arrested in a hit-and-run case filed over a road accident that injured Zia Islam, chief photojournalist of Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

 

Kalyan's lawyer petitioned for the bail and prosecutor Prashanta Kumar Karmakar opposed the bail on Monday.

 

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam granted the bail after hearing in the case.

 

Earlier on January 11, police produced Kalyan before a court and sought remand to quiz him, but the court turned down the petition and asked police to interrogate the actor at the jail gate.

 

On Sunday Kalyan's new lawyer Mohammad Faruk petitioned for bail. The motion was contested by Prosecutor Prashanta Kumar Karmakar.

 

The new counsel had failed to receive a 'no objection' permit from the previous one to handle the case, said Karmakar, and opposed the bail hearing on grounds that the police report had not been received. The court accepted Karmakar's argument on these grounds and dismissed the petition.

 

Zia Islam was hit by a car in front of the Bashundhara City shopping complex in Dhaka’s Panthapath area around 11:30pm on January 9. The Prothom Alo Manager (Security) Retired Major Sajjad Ul Kabir on January 10 lodged a case with Kalabagan Police Station on behalf of his organization. The actor was arrested immediately.

 

Zia was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital from where he was shifted to Apollo Hospital in the city next day.

 

On January 13, he was flown to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for treatment after undergoing brain surgery.
