Aftab Uddin Foundation distributes scholarships, awards

Augustin Sujan: Two teachers have been given Aftab Uddin Memorial Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award-2017 while 20 other meritorious students have been rewarded with scholarships.

The awards and scholarships distributing ceremony was held at the Jadunath Pilot Model School and College at Nagarpur in Tangail on Sunday (March 26).

S.M. Zahid Hasan, trustee of Aftab Uddin Memorial Foundation and executive director of Walton Group, inaugurated the function. “The foundation will sincerely keep on working for the overall advancement of education,” S.M. Zahid Hasan said in his inaugural speech.

Lawmaker of Tangail-6 constituency (Nagarpur-Delduar) Alhaj Khandaker Abdul Baten was present as chief guest while President of Nagarpur High Schools Teachers Association Md Almas Uddin presided over the function.

Nagarpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Towhid Elahi, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Pulak Kanti Chakraborty, Nagarpur Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md. Moniruzzaman were among others present on the occasion.

The lifetime achievement awardees are Md. Ahsan Uddin, former headmaster of Jadunath Pilot Model School and College, and former senior teacher of the institution A.S.M. Erphan Ali. 20 meritorious students of various institutions of Nagarpur Upazila have been rewarded with scholarships. Apart from crests, the recipients of scholarships were given cash money and special gift hampers. Besides, reception and crest have been given to Shiv Shankar Sutradhar, a former meritorious student of Jadunath Pilot Model School and College.

Walton, the country’s leading electronics, electrics, ICT and home appliances products manufacturing and marketing company sponsored the function.

The awards and scholarships are given every year in memory of late Aftab Uddin, a former teacher of Jadunath Pilot Model School and College. Aftab Uddin served as a teacher for 42 years in various educational institutions. He was a leader of teachers and was also involved in various social and cultural activities. Aftab Uddin was awarded as the best teacher in national level. He received the award from the then prime minister at a function at Dhaka’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium in 1994.

The well-regarded educationalist breathed his last on August 21, 1997 while serving as a teacher at Jadunath Pilot Model School and College.

Speaking as the chief guest, Khandaker Abdul Baten recalled the life and works of Aftab Uddin. “He (Aftab Uddin) was a dedicated teacher. Those who are in teaching profession should follow his ideals to build up people educated,” he said.

Ramendra Narayan Shil, former headmaster of Jadunath Pilot Model School and College, present headmaster Nur Hossain Mia, assistant headmaster Md. Shafiqul Islam, Lecturer of Mirzapur College Prvez Sazzad Khan also spoke on the occasion.
