Mayor plans to retrieve canal in capital

Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Annisul Huq

Staff Correspondent: With an aim to mitigate water logging in the capital, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq has undertaken an initiative to recover the canal, projected as 100 feet wide, beside the Bashundhara residential area, known as the 300 feet highway stretching from airport road to Balu river.

DNCC's Public Relations Officer (PRO) Md Monzur-E-Mowla confirmed the matter to risingbd.com on Monday.

Monzur-E-Mowla said defying heavy rain in the morning, the mayor visited a place near Khilkhet rail gate to monitor the ongoing cleaning work by DNCC's Jet and shaker machine. After giving necessary instruction there, he visited the Bashundhara residential area, known as the 300 feet highway stretching from airport road to Balu river, to set effective work plan in order to address water logging in the capital.

During his visit there, Annisul witnessed a different picture which was not expected, Monzur-E-Mowla said.

He said the mayor observed that regular water flow was halted due to crosswise embankments in many places in the midst of the narrow canal, resulting in huge water logging.

Consulting with the authorities concerned, Annisul Huq took a decision to remove the crosswise embankments in the canal.

He also urged the concerned unit of Bangladesh Army to assist in this work.
