August 21 Grenade Attack: 14th anniversary today

Risingbd Desk: The 14th anniversary of the gruesome August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally is being observed with various programmes in a somber mood today.

On this day in 2004, the grisly grenade attack was carried out on an anti-terrorism rally arranged by Awami League at Banbabandhu Avenue. At least 24 leaders and activists, including Awami League women affairs secretary and late President Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman, were killed and 300 others injured in the grenade attack. However, Sheikh Hasina fortunately escaped the attack unhurt but her hearing was affected badly.

Awami League and its associate bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes, including discussions and doa-mahfil for the slain party members in that attack, marking the day.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate message on this occasion.

The party central leaders will place wreaths at a temporarily built memorial monument at 23, Bangabandhu Avenue, in front of its central office at 10:00am commemorating the leaders and activist killed in the attack.
