BB announces agriculture, rural credit policy for FY’18

Economic Correspondent: Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Wednesday announced the agricultural and rural credit policy for the current fiscal year, 2018-19.

In this regard, Bangladesh Bank has arranged a press conference at Jahangir Alam Conference Hall of its head office, where deputy governor Mr. S M Moniruzzaman had discussed the main points in brief.

Bangladesh Bank has fixed the agriculture credit target at 21,800.00 (twenty one thousand and eight hundred) crore taka for the current 2018-2019 fiscal year. The target is approximately 6.86 percent higher than the previous year’s target.

Considering the increased demand of agricultural and rural credit, disbursement target for the state owned and specialized commercial banks is fixed at 9875.00 crore taka and for the private and foreign commercial banks is fixed at 11,925.00 crore taka.

In the previous financial year (2017-18) all the scheduled commercial banks had disbursed 21,393.55 crore taka which is approximately 105% of the affixed target of the previous year. In the previous year agricultural and rural credit was disbursed among 39,62,508 person in total of which number of women borrower is 15,76,137 who have received 6,309.58 crore taka as credit.  In the previous year 30,73,153 small and marginal farmers have received around 15,092 crore taka from different banks. Beside this 30.47 crore taka was disbursed among 8,339 farmers of char, haor and less developed area of the country.

To ensure the food security of the people and to develop a sustainable agricultural credit system, some new concepts have been added to the current agricultural credit policy.
