BD invents low cost technology to diagnose cancer

Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh has invented a low cost technology to diagnose cancer in just five minutes by analysing blood sample.

The technology was invented by a team of researchers of physics department of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

Once the device is built, it will be able to detect cancer in just five minutes and it will cost around Tk 500 to diagnose cancer, said Prof Dr Yasmeen Haque, of the physics department of the university.

“Diagnosis of cancer using the nonlinear optics is for the first time ever in the world,” Prof Dr Yasmeen, who led the research team, said.

The technology enabled device will be ready within a year, the information was revealed at a press conference organised at International Mother Language Institute at Segunbagicha in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The press conference was jointly organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Education Ministry.

Authorities have applied for the patent rights in the US and Bangladesh for the technology “Method and System Based Nonlinear Optical Characteristic of Body Fluid for Diagnosis on Neoplasia”.

Addressing as the chief guest, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “Today is a historic day for Bangladesh marking the epoch making invention.”

UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan, among others, addressed the press briefing.
