BTRC signs deal with Delhi to use India’s satellite

Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh and India today signed a deal on the ‘South Asia Satellite’ formally joining the Indian government’s initiative.

Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Shahjahan Mahmood and Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla signed the agreement.

The deal was signed in a programme titled ‘Orbit Frequency Coordination of South Asia Satellite proposed at 48oE’.

Apart from Bangladesh, other South Asian countries including Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka expressed their solidarity to take part in the project.

BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood said that Bangladesh will get a free transponder among 12 transponders which can be used at Bangladesh’s own choice.

The satellite will have a lifetime of 12 years and will be capable to cover the SAARC region.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said not only Bangladesh is joining the project but also other regional countries are going to join here. Through the project a message will be sent that Bangladesh is not behind than the other countries.

Foreign Ministry Secretary Shahidul Haque, BTRC Vice Chairman Ahsan Habib Khan and others attended the programme.
