'Bangladesh Bank fire originated from electric kattle'

Staff Correspondent: The fire broke out at Bangladesh Bank on March 23 had been originated from electric short circuit through an electric kattle, primary investigation of fire service department said.

Samarendra Nath Biswas, Dhaka divisional deputy director (DD) of fire service, also head of the probe committee over BB fire, made the disclosure while addressing newsmen on Saturday.

He said, "We guess that the fire originated from an electric kattle at a room of General Manager. The fire burnt some chair and table but no important data, computer or files were burnt from the fire."

"The official procedure of the Bangladesh Bank was shut due to public holiday. After quizzing concerned people, final probe report will be sent to the authority," he added.

Earlier, a fire broke out at Bangladesh Bank Bhaban (building) at Motijheel in the capital on Thursday night. The fire originated on the 14th floor of the 30-storey building around 9:200pm.

The fire gutted parts of the office of the Foreign Exchange Policy Department before 12 fire fighting teams doused the fire within an hour, with no reports of casualties.

Following the incident, Bangladesh Bank authorities and the Fire service authority formed two separate probe bodies to probe the incident.
