Secretariat Correspondent: There is a well-known proverb that 'Rice and fish make a Bangali'. Finally the proverb turns into reality as Bangladesh for the first time achieved self-sufficiency in animal protein.

The government is going to make the announcement officially on Sunday.

Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock sources said that Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda is scheduled to make the declaration around 11:00am from his secretariat office.

Sources of the ministry said there was insufficiency in fish and meat production in the country. But, according to the statistics of last year, the production has increased against the demand.

Earlier on February 14, 2016, then Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque told the parliament that against a yearly demand of 21.90 kilogram of fish per person, a person took 19.30 kilogram of fish per person.

In 2015-16, a total of 38.70 lakh tonnes of fish were produced against a demand of 40 lakh tones.

According to the world health organization (WHO) an adult person needs 120 grams of meat per day.
