Bangladesh condemns terrorist attack in NY

Secretariat Correspondent: Bangladesh on Tuesday condemned the overnight terrorist attack in New York reiterating its "Zero Tolerance" stance against terrorism.

A government official statement has confirmed the matter.

Yesterday, three people were injured as the major US city was rocked by a bomb attack carried out at a subway station near Times Square.

"Government of Bangladesh is committed to its declared policy of 'Zero Tolerance' against terrorism, and condemns terrorism and violent extremism in all forms or manifestations anywhere in the world, including Monday morning's incident in New York City," according to the statement of Bangladesh embassy issued shortly after the attack.

A terrorist is a terrorist irrespective of his or her ethnicity or religion, and must be brought to justice, the statement added.

The initial Bangladesh reaction came as reports suggest a would-be suicide bomber inspired by Islamic State extremists strapped on a crude pipe bomb, slipped unnoticed into New York's busiest subway system and set the device off at rush hour Monday.

The suspect, who was identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, however, was arrested and now being treated at a hospital for burns to his hands and abdomen as he set off a crude pipe bomb.
