Bangladesh connects with 2nd submarine cable

Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh has been connected with a second submarine cable that will provide another 1,500 gbps bandwidth to the country.

Managing Director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited Monoar Hossain told media about this on Tuesday.

The inauguration of the second submarine cable was held in line with the SEA-ME-WE 5 consortium’s move to launch its global operation on the same day.

The South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5), a consortium of 15 leading telecom operators from 17 countries, announced its operation at a ceremony in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

On March 7, 2014, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited signed the deal with SEA-ME-WE 5 consortium to build a state-of-the-art undersea cable, whose span will be approximately 20,000 kilometers, connecting 17 countries.

The cable has connected Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Djibuti, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, Turkey and France via 19 landing points.

In 2006, the country was first connected with submarine cable.
