Barrister Rafiqul denied bail, sent to jail

Staff Correspondent: A court in Dhaka sent BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia to jail after rejecting his bail plea in a corruption case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhter passed the order after hearing in the case.

Earlier, police produced him before the court seeking detention on Wednesday.

Rafiqul’s lawyer Taherul Islam and Imdadul Hanif appealed for his proper treatment and division facility. 

The lawyers said, “Rafiqul did not commit the crime in the case for which he was convicted. He served as a lawyer, former MP and minister.”

On Tuesday noon, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia was handed three years’ imprisonment in a case filed against him for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission. The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default, three more months jail term.
