Bonfire leaves 2 dead, 12 injured in Rangpur

Staff Correspondent, Rangpur: Two women have died from burn injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, who received burn injuries while keeping themselves warm from cold with fire.

Rangpur MCH Burn Unit sources said over 14 burned injured people including children were admitted to the hospital in last three days. Of them, two women have died.

The deceased were identified as Razia Begum, 27, at Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat district, and Momena Begum, 32, at Aditmari upazila of the district.

They died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) over the last three days.

The other 12 injured are receiving treatment at the burn unit, while one has been transferred to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) burn unit.

For the last week, Rangpur has been experiencing severe cold waves, and the temperature has dropped between 7 and 8 degrees Celsius.

The temperature has affected the poor the most, as, lacking warm clothes, they have had to resort to making bonfires; which are prone to fire-related accidents.

At least 16 people died from burn injuries and 50 received burn injuries while keeping themselves warm from cold with fire in last year.
