Cabinet approves draft of road transport act 2017

Secretariat Correspondent: The cabinet has approved in principle the draft of Road Transport Act- 2017 with a provision one needs to pass eighth grade to be a driver and fifth grade for being his assistant.
The approval came from the regular cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Monday noon.
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Shafiul Alam told media that point system has been launched so that drivers follow traffic rules. A total of 12 points will be allowed for a drive. The points will be cut step by step for their several crimes.
He said that if a driver loses all 12 points then his driving license will be invalid and he will not get any driving license again.
Cabinet Secretary also said drivers will be jailed for a month or fined Tk5,000 for using mobile phone while driving.
Besides, drivers have to face three years jail or Tk25 lakh fine or both for any death due to racing, he added.
