Case filed against Nobel laureate Dr. Yunus

Staff Correspondent: A case has been lodged with a Dhaka court against Chairman of Grameen Telecom Trust and Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus on charge of embezzling around Tk 7 crore.

Md Bahadur Islam Imtiaz, owner of M/S Taz Enterprise, filed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Subrata Ghosh Shuvo on Tuesday.

Accepting the case, Metropolitan Magistrate Subrata Ghosh Shuvo has ordered the Pallabi Police Station officer-in-charge in the capital to submit the probe report after completion of the investigation in the case.

Bahadur Islam Imtiaz, also a contractor, alleged he had not been paid 70 million for land-filling work of the Grameen Telecom Trust. He claimed that he had signed an agreement with the Grameen Telecom Trust for the land-filling work in 162 bighas of land (1 bigha = 33 decimal) in Zirabo area in Savar.

He spent Tk 50 million in land-filling from June 2015 to November 2016, but the company paid him only around Tk 10.7 million.

The complainant said he started the case, adding around Tk 2.7 million as compensation to the outstanding amount, after the Trust did not to pay the rest of the amount even after getting his legal notice.

Grameen Telecom Trust was founded by Yunus in 2010 to 'implement and facilitate social business ideas'.
