Chattogram beat Khulna in BPL super over thriller

Sports Correspondent: Chattogram Vikings defeat Khulna Titans after the first-ever super over in the history of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital on Saturday.

It was the second win of the Vikings in the season while Khulna suffered fourth loss in a row.

Ariful Haque conceded 18 runs in the last over while the Vikings were struggling to chase down the target of 152 as they needed 19. The Vikings scored 151/8 in 20 overs. So the match went into a tie-breaker in the super over, for the first time in the history of BPL.

Nayeem Hasan struck a six in the second ball of last over while Robbie Frylinck hit two in the fourth and fifth ball. Chattogram failed to score any run barring those three sixes in the last over.

In the super over, Chattogram scored 11 while Pakistani pacer Junaid Khan bowled the only over for Khulna. He also grabbed the wicket of Robbie Frylinck who bowled for Chattogram later and defended the total.

Carlos Brathwaite managed only one in the first ball, but Dawid Malan hit the second ball for a four through the cover. In the third ball, David managed a double but in the fourth ball Brathwaite ran himself out. Stirling was the next batsman of Khulna who scored two in the fifth ball, and they were needed three runs from the last ball but could manage only one run. Eventually, Chittagong Viking won the match.

Earlier, Dawid Malan was the highest run-getter for the Titans as he hit 45 off 43 balls. Titans Captain Mahmudullah Riayd scored 33 off 31 balls after sending Vikings to bat first where they posted 151/6 in 20 overs.

The other Titans batsmen made their fans disappointed as they could not play Vikings bowlers to put a handsome score on the board.

They started the innings with a moderate opening stand of 31 by Paul Stirling and Junaid Siddique. Paul was the first victim of off-spinner Nayeem Hasan. After adding another 10 runs, Junaid disappointed the fan by scoring only 20 runs.

In the third wicket stand, Dawid Malan and Mahmudulla Riyad added 77 runs. But they failed to continue the stand when Malan fell prey to Abu Jayed.

Sunzamul Islam, the left-arm spinner of the Vikings, bagged Mahmudullah and Carlos Brathwaite in two successive deliveries.

After Mahmudullah and Brathwaite have departed, it was Nazmul Hossain Shanto’s responsibility to keep the batting afloat, but the 20-year-old batsman failed once again to take advantage of having a place in the playing XI. He fell after adding only six on the board.

Sunzamul Islam took two wickets for the Vikings while Robbie Frylinck, Nayeem Hasan, Khaled Ahmed and Abu Jayed took one each.

Khulna Titans will play their next game against Rajshahi Kings on 15 January at 1:30 pm in Sylhet International Cricket Stadium while Chattogram Vikings will take on Cumilla Victorians on 13 January at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at 6:30 pm in their next encounter.
