Citizen commission formed to probe genocide in Myanmar

Staff Correspondent: Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee formed a citizen commission to investigate violence in Rakhine state of Myanmar that has led to exodus of over 520,000 Rohingya people.

Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee President Shahriar Kabir announced the committee consisting of 33 members at a press conference at the VIP lounge of the National Press Club in the city on Wednesday.

Former Justice of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division Shamsul Huda and Former Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik have been made the chairman and member secretary of the commission respectively.

Justice Md Golam Rabbani, Justice Kazi Ebadul Haque, Justice Momtaz Uddin, Justice Syed Amirul Islam, Barrister Shafik Ahmed, Prof Ajoy Roy, Prof Anisuzzaman and eminent writer and journalist Shahriar Kabir are among the members of the commission.

To assist the commission, a secretariat has been formed with over 100 members that belong to journalists, lawyers and human rights workers. Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee's central General Secretary Kazi Mukul will coordinate the secretariat. 

According to their work plan, the committee will visit the Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar within a month and publish their findings report within the next four months.

In reply to a query, Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee President Shahriar Kabir said that the commission will visit Rakhine if the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar permit.
