Committee formed to settle RMG unrest

Senior Correspondent: The government has formed a 12-member committee to settle the workers’ unrest in the country’s readymade garment factories over the implementation of their minimum pay structure.

The committee was formed with five representatives from the workers and five others from the officials of the commerce and labour ministries to end the ongoing unrest, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi told reporters on Tuesday evening.

While briefing the newsmen after a meeting with the garment workers and their owners at the Department of Labour in Dhaka, Munshi said, “Basic and gross salaries of the garment workers would not be decreased ever.”

He also called upon the agitated garment makers to return their working places from tomorrow and assured them saying, “We will solve your all sorts of problems including salary by a month.”

Earlier, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and State Minister for Labour Munnujan Sufian held a meeting with the garment workers and owners at the Department of Labour in Motijheel area of Dhaka around 4:30pm.

Hundreds of garment workers took to the streets for a third consecutive day to press home their demands including implementation of minimum wage.

Garments workers started agitation since Sunday (January 6) over the disparity in pay in the new wage structure.

They blocked many busy thoroughfares during their protest bringing the capital to a standstill in many places.
