Cyclone 'Mora' weakens

Staff Correspondent: The gusty winds and heavy rains in the coastal districts of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar, triggered by the landfall of powerful severe cyclonic storm ‘Mora’ early Tuesday, are likely to continue for 6 hours though the cyclone has weakened.

However, the bad weather is likely to prevail across the country for 12 hours.

Shamsuddin Ahmed, a director at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, in a briefing said this on Tuesday.

He said the inclement weather caused by the cyclone, which is likely to advance further north and turn into a depression, will improve gradually after 12 hours.

Though the cyclone whipped gusts and torrential rains, there is no report of any casualty so far in the affected coastal areas.

When asked over the great danger signal no. 10, Shamsuddin Ahmed said though the bad weather continues across the country. We will take some times to get down the great danger signal no. 10. After six hours, we are set to announce to keep hoisted the cautionary signals.

Earlier, the maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar were advised to keep hoisted great danger signal No 10.

The coastal districts of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur and their offshore islands and chars also come under danger signal No 10.
