DNCC Mayor Race: Tabith Awal gets BNP’s ticket

Senior Reporter: BNP executive committee member Md Tabith Awal has won the party ticket for the mayor in the by-polls to the Dhaka North City Corporation.

Secretary General of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced his name on Monday night after a meeting at the party chairperson's Gulshan office.

The others who sought the BNP ticket were BNP Special Affairs Secretary Dr. Asaduzzaman Ripon, retired army major and former MP Akhtaruzzaman, Dhaka Metropolitan North Unit President MA Kayum and BNP’s Assistant Secretary for Publication Affairs Shakil Wahed.

Tabith Awal contested the last DNCC polls held on April 28 in 2015 with BNP ticket. The BNP boycotted the voting halfway through bringing various allegations, including widespread vote rigging.

The mayoral by-polls in the DNCC will be held on February 26. The mayor post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq.
