DUCSU election: Contempt of Court notice issued against VC

Staff Correspondent: A Contempt of Court notice has been served against three people including Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University DR. Md. Akhtaruzzaman for not arranging Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election avoiding a High Court order.

Two others are Proctor Dr AKM Rabbani and Treasurer Dr Kamal Uddin.

Advocate Monjil Morsed sent the notice by mail on Tuesday.

The responders have been asked to answer the petition within seven days otherwise they have a face a case of Contempt of Court.

On January 2018, the High Court directed the Dhaka University (DU) authorities to take steps to hold an election to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) within six months.

A bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order following a writ petition.

In 2012, 25 DU students filed the petition with the court, seeking its order to hold the long-stalled DUCSU polls. The last DUCSU election was held in 1990.
