Death for two over rape and murder of child upheld

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has upheld death sentences for two accused in a case over the rape and murder of seven-year-old girl Alpona Khatun in Maheshpur Upazila of Jhenaidah.
The convicts are Md Saiful Islam and Md Arif Hossain.
Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty delivered the verdict on Thursday after hearing the death reference and appeals of the convicts.
Lawyers SM Shahjahan and Sheikh Afil Uddin stood for the accused while Deputy Attorney General Moniruzzaman Rubel, assistant attorney generals Abul Kalam Azad Khan, Sayeda Sabina Ahmed and Marufa Akter Shiuli represented the state during the hearing in the court.
According to the case statement, the convicts murdered Alpona Khatun at a crop field in Maheshpur Upazila after raping her in 2008.
The victim’s father Torab Ali filed a case with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal the same year. The tribunal ordered the death sentence in 2011.
