Death penalty to prevent food adulteration if necessary

Senior Correspondent: Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said if needed, a strict law will be enacted keeping a provision of death penalty or life term imprisonment for the food adulterators in order to prevent food adulteration.

The minister made the disclosure after the inauguration of a campaign of Bangladesh Safe Food Authority in front of the secretariat on Sunday aiming to ensure safe food during this month of Ramadan.

Sadhan Chandra said, “If necessary, to prevent food adulteration, food safety law 2013 will be amended with a recommendation of death penalty or life imprisonment for food adulteration.

The minister said, “The government has formulated zero-tolerance policy against those who commit the crime of adulteration. We want people to have safe food, not only in the month of Ramadan, but across the 12 months. Those who commit such crime are enemies of society and humanity.”

If necessary, the number of mobile court, anti-food adulteration drives which are underway in Ramadan, will be boosted up, he said.

Raising public awareness, the minister called for mass movement to ensure food items free from adulteration.
