Dhaka narrowly escapes major sabotage

Staff Correspondent: The capital Dhaka has narrowly escaped a major sabotage which was likely to take place in Panthapath area half a kilometre away from Dhanmondi-32.

Within this area, a member of Neo-JMB's suicide squad took position to carry out suicide blasts targeting those heading towards Dhanmondi Road No 32 to pay homage to Bangabandhu on National Mourning Day. Based on information, detectives visited the spot and cordoned off the building where the suspected militant was staying. At last, law enforcers have become successful in foiling the plot to carry out the major sabotage.

Detectives think that although militants in different operations conducted by law enforcers have lost their power to launch a major attack, they are trying to be united and carry out sabotage to destabilise the country.

Saiful Islam, a member of Neo-JMB, was killed in a suicide blast while a SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) team of police was carrying out an operation codenamed "August Bite" at the Hotel Olio International in the capital's Panthapath area.

During this time, Saiful exploded two powerful bombs that left a passer-by injured. The blast also made a portion of wall of a nearby building collapse.

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque briefed media moments after being confirmed about the death of Saiful.

What if the entire wall collapsed in the bomb explosion, can you imagine? Shahidul asked.

He added that the capital Dhaka has narrowly escaped a major attack due to the detective activity and surveillance.

Police cordoned off Hotel Olio International in Dhaka’s Panthapath area early Tuesday where law enforcers conducted a raid suspecting a militant hideout. Saiful was killed in the operation.

Saiful was a third year student of Political Science in Khulna BL College. He is the resident of Noakathi village of Dumuria upazila in Khulna. His father Abul Khair is an Imam of Noakathi Matherhat mosque.
