Drug trader killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: A suspected drug trader was killed and three policemen received injury in a gunfight between drug trader and police in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.

The incident took place in Damdamia BGB check-post area of Teknaf early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Shamsul Alam alias Barmaiya Shamsu, 35, son of late Mohammad Hossain, hailed from Pashchim Sikdarpara of Hinla union. 

Police said that Shamsul Alam was a listed drug trader. He was also wanted in 10 drug cases filed in Teknaf police station.

Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Prodip Kumar Dash said police arrested him on Sunday afternoon. Later, following his information, the law enforcers conducted the drive in the area early Monday. Sensing the presence of the police, his associates opened fire on the police and tried to take Shamsul away, forcing the police to strike back in self defence.

Meanwhile, two locally made guns, 12 rounds of bullets and 20,000 pieces of Yaba pills.

The body has been kept in the Cox’s Sadar Hospital for autopsy, the OC added.
