Duty imposed on polythene to promote use of jute bags

Staff Correspondent: Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has imposed 5 percent supplementary duty on production of all kinds of polythene and plastic bags to encourage the use of jute bags and to protect environmental pollution.

While placing the budget in the Parliament on Thursday, he proposed to impose five percent supplementary duty as markets are flooded by rampant use of polythene and plastic bags, which are largely responsible for environmental pollution.

Alongside promoting environment-friendly domestics products, the move of proposing supplementary duty on polythene and plastic bags will help check environmental pollution and reduce water-logging problems in Dhaka city.
