EC to take decision on 25 Jamaat candidates by Monday

Staff Correspondent: The Election Commission (EC) will take its decision by Monday (Dec 24) following a High Court rule over the candidature of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in the upcoming 11^th parliamentary elections slated for December 30.

EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed made the disclosure while replying to a question of the reporters at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Thursday.

“We have received the letter from honorable High Court today. We have directed our law section to examine the matter so that it can be placed before the commission,” he said.

The commission will obviously take a decision, he added.

The High Court on December 18 directed the commission to dispose the application filed for cancelling the candidacy of 25 Jamaat-e-Islami men by three working days.

The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why the EC’s decision to allow 25 Jamaat candidates to contest in the elections despite the cancellation of their registration should not be declared illegal.

In the rule, the court also asked the EC to show causes why the commission should not be directed to cancel their candidacy.
