Education Ministry’s letters to stop outer campuses

Staff Correspondent: The Ministry of Education has taken a stern position on the permanent campus issue.

Letters from the Ministry of Education were issued Tuesday to stop outer campuses of the University of Information Science and Technology (USTC) in Chittagong and the City University of Dhaka. Besides, Presidency University has been given two months time to set up a permanent campus.

It is known that Presidency University has failed to purchase land for its permanent campus. So, the education ministry has given the university a two- month ultimatum.

In a letter to Presidency University, it has been said that if the land cannot be purchased by 30 June, the admission have to be postponed from July. The suspension will continue till the land is bought.

In addition, letters were sent to 12 universities. These universities were thanked for their activities on permanent campus. But among the 12 universities, USTC and City University are running their outer campuses violating the law.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid gave a five-point ultimatum to establish permanent campuses from September in 2010. The deadline ended in January this year. Then a high level committee was formed to increase time for progress review.

There are currently 95 private universities in the country, of which 84 are in operation.
