Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated

Desk Report: Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of Muslims, is being celebrated across the country today (Monday) after a month of fasting.

Millions raised their hands to pray for peace and prosperity after Eid congregations – or jamaats, as they are commonly referred to.

The biggest of these congregations was held at Kishoreganj’s Sholakia amid memories of last year’s unprecedented attack near the Eid grounds haunt the people.

Four people, including a woman and two policemen, were killed after banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujaheedin Bangladesh (JMB) detonated bombs near Sholakia Eid ground on July 7 last year.

Law enforcement agencies and local administration have ratcheted up security to avert such attacks.

In Dhaka, a total of 410 congregations are set to be held. The Baitul Muqarram National Mosque is scheduled to organise five jamaats at 7am, 8am, 9am, 10am and 10:45am.

The main Eid-ul-Fitr congregation was held at the National Eidgah at 8:30am.

Television channels are airing special programmes while newspapers and magazines carried special supplements.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have greeted the nation on the occasion. They are expected to exchange greetings with the people later in the day.
