Chattogram fire death toll rises to 9

Staff Correspondent, Chattogram: The death toll rose to nine, including seven members of two families, were burned to death as a deadly fire broke out at Chaktai slum in Bhera market area of the port city early Sunday.
Seven of the deceased were identified as Rahima Akhtar, 40, her daughter Nazma, 24; Zakir Hossain Babu, 8, Nasrin, 16, Hasina Aktar, 35, Ayesha, 37, and Sohagh, 19.
The fire broke out at the slum around 3:00am. On information, 10 fire units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Later, the fire fighters recovered eight bodies from the slum.
Mohammad Jasim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence confirmed the matter.
Over two hundred shanties were gutted after the fire broke out in the slum.
A probe committee has been formed in this regard.
