Ershad's radar scam case verdict this afternoon

Staff Correspondent: A court in Dhaka is set to deliver its judgment today afternoon in a radar purchase scam case against former President and Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad.

Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah of Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court will deliver the judgment around 3:00pm on Wednesday.

The court on April 12 set today (Wednesday) for delivering the verdict after both the prosecution and the defence had completed their closing arguments in the case.

Earlier on January 8, the Supreme Court (SC) directed the lower court concerned to resume and finish the trial proceedings of the scam case.

The now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption filed the case against Ershad and three others on May 4 in 1992.

According to the case statement, Ershad in connivance with others allegedly caused a loss of Tk 64.04 crore to the state exchequer by purchasing radars from the USA while he was in power.

On August 12, 1995, the trial court framed charges against Ershad, former air chiefs Sultan Mahmud and Mamtazuddin Ahmed, and United Traders Ltd director AKM Musa. Musa has been absconding since then.
