Examine physical, mental health of Shahidul: HC

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has directed the authority concerned to examine whether the photographer Dr Shahidul Alam was tortured physically and mentally after he was detained.

The court asked the home secretary to submit report to Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court within Monday.

The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir on Thursday passed the order after hearing a writ petition in this regard challenging the lower court order that placed him on a seven-day remand.

Sara Hossain stood for Shahidul Alam in the court. Dr Kamal Hossain and Dr Shahdeen Malik were present during the hearing.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam accompany with Deputy Attorney General represented the state.

Earlier on July 7 (Tuesday), the court instructed the jail authority to send Shahidul to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for treatment after his wife Rahnuma Ahmed filed the writ.

In compliance with the court order, Shahidul was taken to BSMMU July 8 (Wednesday). But he was taken to back to DB custody as physicians found no health issues for admission to the hospital.
