Faria remanded in rumour case

Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court placed small entrepreneur Faria Mahjabin on a three-day remand in a case filed for inciting recent student protests through rumour on Facebook.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate AKM Mainuddin Siddiqui on Friday passed the order after Inspector Majedul Islam of Hazaribagh Police Station placed her with a seven-day remand prayer in the case filed under Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.

Faria, however, did not have any lawyer to move for her in the court. She herself did not tell the court anything even after the Magistrate asked her.

Mokbulur Rahman, general registrar in the court for the concerned police station, confirmed the news.

Faria, 28, wife of Md Riasat and owner of Nerdy Bean Coffee Haus in Dhanmondi, was arrested on Thursday night from her residence in Dhanmondi by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

The elite force members also seized her mobile phone, printed copy of her Facebook profile and recovered an audio clip during the drive.

Protests flared across Bangladesh on July 29, when two college students were run over by a bus while it was competing with another one at Dhaka’s Airport Road.

Since then, students took to the streets for eight days in a row – besieging the capital and blockading the streets for hours – before things rolled over to violence.
