Food menu of prisoners being changed

Staff Correspondent: For the first time in the history of prisons in Bangladesh, the regular food menu of prisoners is being changed.

The change is being come due to intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The regular breakfast menu of prisoners will also be changed; instead of old dry bread and molasses, different food items including vegetables and hotchpotch will be arranged for their breakfast.

As a result, the 272-year old rules are being changed and the prisoners will get better quality food.

Security Services Division of the Ministry of Home has sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance in this regard. It will be finalized after approval from the Finance Ministry, sources said.

According to sources, the prisoners are disappointed due to food served by the authorities. Their food menu, especially the quality of breakfast was very poor. The breakfast menu includes flour bread and sugarcane molasses. The prisoners do not want to eat.

In this situation, prisoners placed their demands when Rangpur Deputy Commissioner visited Rangpur Central Jail on March 29, 2018. At the time, they demanded bread, halua, hotchpotch and vegetables in their breakfast.

Jailer of Keraniganj Central Jail Mahbubur Rahman said as per Prime Minister's order already the new budget for breakfast has been sent to the ministry for financial allocation, hopefully soon it will be approved and implemented.

“The prisons of the country have been operating following the British period law. Many things have to be included to turn the prisons into rehabilitation centers and for that some changes need to be made in the law, he added.
