Foot overbridge to be named after Abrar

Staff Correspondent: Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam has pledged to build a foot overbridge within three months and name it after Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, who was killed in a road accident in front of Bashundhara gate of Pragati Sarani area in the capital on Tuesday morning.

The mayor came up with the pledge while talking to the students during his visit to the  scene of Tuesday morning's accident.

The demonstrating students of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) presented their written 12-point demand to the mayor.

Addressing the situation, and responding to the demands made by the students, the mayor said: "I will construct a foot overbridge named after Abrar within two or three months.

"We will also form a committee which will include representatives of the students. Give me some time."

Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, honours 1st year student of International Relations Department of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), was crushed under the wheels of a speedy bus in front of Bashundhara gate of Pragati Sarani area in the capital on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place in the morning when a bus of ‘Suprovat Paribahan’ ran over Abrar, leaving him dead on the spot, according to sources.

Students of different private universities blocked the road in front of Jamuna Future Park following the death.

The students are chanting slogans demanding capital punishment of the bus driver.
