Formal inauguration of MNP service today

Staff Correspondent: The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service for switching operator without changing mobile phone number will be inaugurated formally today.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to launch the service from Ganabhaban this morning, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Council (BTRC).

Meanwhile, Post, Telecommunication and ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar said the cost for the service will be reduced due to demands from operators and users.

To take the MNP service, users are paying Tk 157.50 for a new SIM card and service charge. Of the total cost, MNP charge is Tk 50, VAT Tk 7.50 and New SIM Tk 100.

The reduction comes with the government deciding to cut down the Tk. 100 SIM Tax, reducing the total cost to only Tk 57.50.

Following the MNP service, the customers will have to wait at least 90 days to make another switch, if the service is started within 72 hours of application.
