Foyzur’s father, uncle sent to jail after remand

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet: A Sylhet court has ordered the authorities concerned to send the father and maternal uncle of Foyzur Rahman, who allegedly carried out a knife attack on eminent writer Professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, to jail on completion of their remand.

Haridas Kumar, judge of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court-3, passed the order after Jalalabad police station officer-in-charge (OC) Shafiqul Rahman, also the investigation officer of a case filed over the knife attack, produced them before the court on Thursday afternoon.

During the investigation, Foyzur’s parents and maternal uncle have provided some information which is being cross-checked. But details about the outcome of the investigation could not be disclosed at this moment for the sake of the investigation, Shafiqul said.

On March 11, the court placed the parents and an uncle of Foyzur Rahman, who attacked Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, on remand for different terms in connection with the attack.

The court placed Foyzur’s father Atiqur Rahman and his uncle Fozlur Rahman on a five-day remand and mother Minara Begum on a two-day remand in a case filed over the knife attack.

On March 3, Prof Iqbal was attacked by Foyzur Rahman with a knife at a programme at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

He was caught red-handed and was beaten by the mob. SUST registrar filed the case with Jalalabad Police Station on March 5.

Foyzur is now on remand as the same court on March 8 placed him on a 10-day remand in connection with the attack.
