Gaibandha-1 by-polls likely in March

Staff Correspondent: By-polls in Gaibandha-1 constituency is likely to be held on the edge of March, according to Election Commission (EC).

EC secretary Mohammad Abdullah said on Tuesday, "EC has already started preparing working plan in this regard. The schedule for the polls may be announced early February."

"A Gazette notification declaring the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) seat as vacant reached EC on Monday. According to the Bangladesh constitution, it is mandatory to hold the by-polls within 90 days. So, the JS seat must go to polls in March. Decision in this regard would be taken within one or two days," he added.

The Jatiya Sangsad seat fell vacant following the murder of Awami League lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton at his own house in Sundarganj on December 31, 2016.
