‘Give attention to proper educational activities’

Desk Report: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday asked the authorities concerned to give attention to the educational institutions whether educational activities are conducted properly there.

"Our students are meritorious and we're giving all sorts of facilities to them. Why they couldn't pass in the examination. So I think that special attention will have to be given to all institutions whether educational activities are properly run there," she said.

The prime minister said this while formally inaugurating the free textbook distribution programme and receiving the results of this year's Primary Education Completion (PEC), Ebtedayee, Junior School Certificate (JSC), Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) and equivalent examinations at her official Ganabhaban residence here this morning.

Sheikh Hasina formally opened the free textbook distribution programme by handing over books of primary and secondary levels to students.

The premier also directed the authorities concerned to formulate time- befitting curriculum for the students to keep pace with the modern world.

"The world is changing regularly. So we'll have to prepare a time- befitting curriculum to keep pace with the modern world," she said.

The premier put emphasis on further strengthening the training programme for the teachers. "Training is being imparted to teachers, but this should be strengthened further ... we want to move keeping pace with era," she said.

Referring to the introduction of PEC, JSC and other equivalent examinations, she said these exams help children raise self confidence by removing fear about public examinations.

The prime minister said her government has given the highest importance to education for building a developed and prosperous nation by rooting out poverty, saying that no nation can achieve its desired goal without education.

She said her government has been doing everything necessary for creating an educated generation to advance the country towards desired target.

Terming education as assets, Sheikh Hasina advised the students to develop themselves as well-educated saying none can steal or snatch education.

The premier said, soon after the independence, Bangabandhu government had given top priority to education as well as made primary education compulsory and nationalised huge number of primary schools.

She mentioned that her party formulated education policy after consultations with experts and holding seminars, symposiums and discussion meetings with all stakeholders.

Besides, she said, steps have been taken to distribute free textbooks, provide the students with stipends and introduce school feeding program, while multimedia classrooms have also been set up at their schools and colleges.

Sheikh Hasina said the country's independence was achieved in exchange for blood of three million martyrs.

"Bangabandhu liberated Bangladesh with a goal of establishing a hunger and poverty-free country ... his dream will be materialised when we could establish Sonar Bangla free from hunger and poverty," she said.

The prime minister also reiterated her determination to establish Bangladesh as a dignified nation on the world stage. "We want to move keeping our head high, not begging to others," she said.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and Minister for Primary and Mass Education Advocate Mostafizur Rahman also spoke, while Education Secretary Sohrab Hossain moderated the function.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid handed over the results of JSC and JDC examinations, while Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman formally handed over the PEC and Ebtedayee results to the Prime Minister.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Primary and Mass Education Ministry Motahar Hossain, PM's Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim were present on the occasion, among others.
