Staff Correspondent: Search engine giant Google is celebrating the International Labour Day 2017 with a doodle.
International Labour Day came into being after workers protested for the eight-hour work day. It is the labour movement of the 1800s which has resulted in paid leaves, proper wages and breaks for the workforce.
May 1 was declared as International Labour Day as in 1884 the American Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions demand for an eight-hour work which came into effect as of May 1, 1886.

The protest also resulted in Haymarket Riot of 1886, in which four people were killed and many wounded. Following the incident, the eight-hour workday was sanctioned. Today, International Workers’ Day is viewed as a public holiday in over 80 countries.
