Govt college teachers resume work abstention

Staff Correspondent: For the second consecutive day, the government college teachers are continuing their work abstention protesting the government’s move to give teachers of newly nationalized colleges the same status and benefits enjoyed by those in the education cadre.

BCS General Education Cadres' Committee yesterday enforced a two-day strike protesting the government's move. The theme of the strike programme was 'No BCS, No Cadre'.

The demands of the demonstrating teachers included stopping inclusion of nationalized college teachers under BCS service status, introducing guidelines regarding the issue immediately and halting transfers of teachers of the nationalized colleges.

BCS General Education Cadres' Committee announced the strike on November 24. The organization also threatened that the strike would be called on January 6, 7 and 8.

I K Selim Ullah Khondaker, president of BCS General Education Cadres' Committee, said "About 14,000 teachers of BCS education cadre will face problem if the newly nationalized colleges come under BCS service status. We will not accept the decision. Hope the government will meet our demand."
