‘Govt plans to hold general election in phases’

KMA Hasnat and Shariar Sifat, from Mirzapur, Tangail: Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said the government has taken a plan to arrange general election in several phases in different divisions.

The Minister said, “Now vote rigging is not possible as voters were provided ID card with respective photos. There are possibilities to create chaos in some places by miscreants. So, the government has taken a plan to arrange general election in several phases ensuring enough security measures.”

Finance Minister said this while speaking at a programme marking 99th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children’s Day at Bharateswari Homes at Mirzapur of Tangail on Saturday noon.

Muhith said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will dissolve the current parliament three months before the next general election.  An election-time cabinet will be formed from only the parties represented in the current parliament.”

BNP will not get room for any representative in the poll-time cabinet as the party has no lawmaker in the current parliament, he added.

Finance Minister said the size of the next possible budget will be between Tk 4,60,000 crore to Tk 4,75,000 crore. Social security coverage is increasing every year. It will be widened more in next budget.

He said every district has been classified in regarding population, size, wealth and human resources. According to this classification, district-wise budget will be made across the country within next three years.

About UN recognition of Bangladesh’s graduation from ‘Least Developed Country’ to ‘Developing Country’ status Muhith said, “We received a letter in this connection on March 15. The United Nations (UN) will keep us in surveillance till 2024. By this time, we will be qualified for middle-income country and we will secure position in the list of developed countries within 2041. The government is on the right track of development which was set by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
