Govt to import 50 tons more rice 

Special Correspondent: The government has taken a decision to import 50 tons of rice more to meet the shortage of food across the country.

The rice will be imported through international quotations which will cost Tk 181 crore and 77 lakh.

However, Food Secretary said that the government will import a total of 90 lakh tons of rice and wheat through international quotation within the coming November.

Mostafizur Rahman, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division, came up with the disclosure while briefing media after a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith held at the Auditorium of the Cabinet Division at Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday.

He said a huge amount of crops were damaged by flood this year. The government could not store enough food as the production target was snapped by the flood. Alongside, the food crisis also turned bigger due to relief assistance to the flood affected people across the country.

In this circumstances, the government has decided to import 20 lakh tons of food grains from different countries of the world to meet the shortage.

The amount includes 15 lakh tons of rice and 5 lakh tons of wheat.
