HC issues rule for providing Tk one crore to Russel

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to give Tk one crore to Russel Sarker who lost his leg when a Green Line Paribahan bus hit him on the slope of Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover at Dholaiparh area of Jatrabari in the capital.

The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Haque issued the rule following a writ petition on Monday.

Advocate Khandaker Shamsul Haque Reza stood for the writ petition while deputy attorney general Aurobindo Kumar Roy represented the state in the court.

Member of Parliament from Gaibandha-Joypurhat reserved seat Advocate Umme Kulsum Smriti filed the writ petition.

Russel Sarker, the 23-year-old rent-a-car driver, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with critical injuries, following the horrendous experience on Mayor Mohammad Hanif flyover in old parts of Dhaka on April 28.

Afterwards, he was shifted to a private hospital for better treatment.

According to Police, Russel was moving back to the city, after dropping off passenger in Keraniganj.

A bus of Green Line Paribahan hit Russel’s car on the slope of Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar area of Jatrabari.

Russel stopped the car and asked the bus driver through the window the reason of hitting his vehicle.

At one stage, the bus driver became furious after exchanging heated words and drove the bus over Russel, leaving the latter’s left leg separated from the knee.

Victim’s elder brother Arif Sarkar filed a case in this connection.
