Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) on Monday issued a status quo on cutting down all forest trees across the country for next six months.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why their inaction to stop felling the trees in name of project should not be declared as illegal.
An HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Razik Al-Jalil came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (BELA), a non-profit and non-governmental organization of lawyers.
Advocate Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Advocate Sayed Ahmed Kabir stood for the petition while Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman represented the state during the hearing in the court.
The BELA filed the writ petition attaching reports published in daily newspapers.
