HC orders for scrutinizing Mirza Abbas’s papers within 24hrs

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) on Tuesday directed the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to immediately forward the nomination papers of BNP leader Mirza Abbas to the returning officer for scrutiny.

The court also directed the returning officer for Dhaka-9 constituency to complete the scrutiny of the nomination papers within 24 hours.

An HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order.

The HC order came following a writ petition filed by Mirza Abbas challenging the retuning officer’s refusal to accept this nomination.

Advocate Zainul Abedin moved for Mirza Abbas at the courtroom.

Mirza Abbas submitted his nomination to the returning officer of Dhaka on November 28, but the returning officer refused to accept the nomination papers.

Mirza Abbas then submitted the nomination papers to the Election Commission on December 1 but the Election Commission did not send the nomination papers to the returning officer for scrutiny.

The BNP leader later filed the writ petition with the High Court seeking its directives to the CEC to forward the nomination to the returning officer.
